Like many of you, our family grew by one COVID puppy late January 2021. Kerbey has kept us on our toes with training. Well, to be honest, he has stayed on our toes, he loves to sit on our feet. Also stay tuned on who is training who, a hint on current progress, he just ran in here carrying someone's hat.
We quickly became tired of the cost and plastic that came with many commercially available treats and began experimenting to identify cost-friendly and eco-friendly alternatives. Below is the winning recipe. Yes, the dogs voted. These are all human ingredients though so we won't judge if you sample some, we might have tried these as well..
Recipe (Photos of each step below)
- 1/2 to 1 cup water
- 2 Bananas
- 1 cup oats
- 3/4 cup Peanut Butter
Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
Blending the water and bananas together.
Add oats and peanut butter and mix thoroughly.
Spread on pan and bake at 250 degrees for 20-30 minutes. We love to use silicon pan liners to prevent sticking. Bake longer or add more oats/flour if you want a harder consistency treat.
You can use a cookie cutter to cut the treats out after baking or simply slice into squares. Have fun and experiment with different ingredients. This blend was a hit for both our dogs and those of our friends and family!
These do not have any preservatives so it is best to use them within a couple of days or keep refrigerated/frozen if you want to make a larger batch. They are great for training or putting inside a toy to keep your dog busy for a bit.
We have done variations of this recipe using cream cheese, cheddar cheese, tuna and various other ingredients. Use whatever your dog loves! To get a smooth consistency, a high-powered blender (like a Vitamix or Ninja) works great but a regular stand mixer or your hands will work in a pinch.
